Vivo S1 Pro : Great Design with Limited Performance?

Vivo S Pro has been released in Nepal at the start of the year 2020 and it is one of the mid-range smartphones available in Nepal. With pricing of Rs. 36,790 for 8/128GB variant Vivo S1 Pro has been launched. So, with this price point what are the features and specs we are getting with this device? Let’s find out in detail.

Display and Design

Vivo S1 Pro is one of the best looking mid-range smartphones available in Nepal. At the front, there is a teardrop notch on an FHD+ AMOLED panel. While at back, there is a polycarbonate panel and a diamond-shaped camera housing incorporating quad camera setup. Talking about the style, the form factor is slightly different than what other smartphones are adapting and in overall I like the aesthetics of the Vivo S1 Pro.

This device has a  6.38-inch FHD+(1080x2340 pixels) Super AMOLED panel at the front. The display has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio with 83.4% screen to body ratio. The display can produce vibrant color, deep back, and great viewing angle. The display is bright enough and is excellent for media consumption compared to what we have seen in other devices at this price point.

Chipset and Performance

To power the Vivo S1 Pro, Snapdragon 665 Chipset is coupled with Adreno 610 GPU. These chipsets are powerful enough to handle daily tasks like media consumption, internet surfing, and casual gaming. But if you want to run graphics and CPU intensive application then this device might not be for you as it has a hard time handling these tasks. We have seen better chipset than Snapdragon 665 in lots of mid-range chipsets, and smartphones that released in 2020 should perform better than this.

Only 8/128GB variant of Vivo S1 Pro is available to be purchased. And it also supports external microSD cards using SIM 2 slot. It seems like the storage and RAM option provided are more than adequate to handle the daily tasks. With Vivo S1 Pro, multitasking is not a problem as it can collect lots of applications running in the background, but keep in mind that the execution time and application opening time required in Vivo S1 Pro is longer than its competitors. The device comes with Android 9 Pie OS, which has Funtouch 9.2 skin on top.

Camera, Photo and Video Quality

Vivo S1 Pro has a quad rear camera setup in a diamond-shaped camera housing at the back of the phone. The primary 48 MP f/1.8 main sensor can produce a good quality photo. Similarly, there is an 8 MP ultrawide sensor, 2MP dedicated macro sensor, and a 2MP depth sensor. Overall, the photo quality is average, and at this price point, we have seen smartphones that can capture better images than what Vivo S1 Pro offers.

In terms of Video recording, it can record 1080p @30fps, 720p and 480p video. To me, these options are not satisfactory, with a 48MP sensor it should be capable of recording 4k video @30fps, FHD @ 60fps and HD in slow motion. There is no OIS and EIS to stabilize the footage, so video recording is mediocre.

At the front we can see a 32 MP selfie camera, it can capture an image with adequate detail and background separation is good. But, it suffers in different lighting condition and low light shots are little blurry. Provided below are some sample shot was taken from Vivo S1 Pro.

Battery and Other Features

There is a larger 4,500 mAh battery inside Vivo S1 Pro which supports 18 W fast charging technology. It takes about an hour to charge from zero to full charge. And the battery lasted for about 21hr 50 minutes of video playback at medium brightness and volume level. The good thing is Vivo S1 Pro has a USB Type C connector rather than a micro USB connector.

Additionally, there is an under-display fingerprint sensor which is quite fast but not as fast as other flagship smartphones. Similarly, about the connectivity, it got dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth V5.0, FM Radio, GPS, GLONASS, etc. Vivo S1 Pro compete for market share with Redmi K20, Note 8 Pro, Galaxy A50s, Oppo F11 Pro, Huawei P30 Lite, etc.

Verdicts

Vivo Nepal is doing heavy marketing regarding Vivo S1 Pro. The good thing about this device is that it got better Display and a bigger battery. Beside it, other specs are average and the chipset used is not capable of intense gaming. Personally, I felt that with the price of Rs. 36,790 Vivo should offer a 6/64 GB variant with fast RAM and Storage technology and powerful chipset rather than providing an 8/128GB variant with the mediocre chipset. So, what do you think about this device? Do you like this model? Let us know in a comment below.
